-
Work strategically to respond to student demand and place-based needs to increase access/offering.
-
Facilitate improved practice in the coordination and delivery of VDSS.
What is VET?
VET is practical, hands-on learning that equips students with real-world skills for specific industries.

By completing a VET course while at school, students gain a nationally recognised qualification that demonstrates their ability to apply real skills in the workplace. VET also contributes towards the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), VCE Vocational Major (VM), or Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC), helping students stay engaged and complete their secondary education.

Students also develop specialised knowledge in areas they’re passionate about, with pathways into employment, further training or higher education. Some students can even earn while they learn by undertaking a School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT) - combining paid work, training and school.

VET is more than a subject, it’s a powerful step toward future careers, training or university. It helps young people explore options, build confidence and get a head start on their future.

Overview of VCE
VM VPC SBAT
Students may include nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) in their VCE, VCE VM or VPC.

They can undertake VET through a VCE VET program, a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SBAT), or any other approved VET qualification and receive credit towards their VCE, VCE VM or VPC.
VCE VET programs are VET qualifications approved by the VCAA following consultation with schools, industry and training providers.

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBATs)
A SBAT is an apprenticeship or traineeship which enables students to become qualified in the industry they want to work in, while gaining valuable work experience.

A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SBAT) is undertaken by a student who is enrolled in a senior secondary program (VCE, VCE VM or VPC)
Regular school attendance is combined with at least one timetabled day per week spent on the job or in training during the normal school week.
An SBAT combines part-time, practical experience in the workplace with recognised, structured training from Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or TAFE. These arrangements are available for a wide range of jobs across industry areas including emerging technologies, health, hospitality, business, construction, engineering and community services.
SBATs must be endorsed by the school and meet the Department of Education’s SBAT guidelines.
VCE VM
The VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM) is a two-year applied learning program that’s part of the VCE.
To complete the VCE VM, students need to successfully complete at least 16 units. This needs to include:
-
3 VCE VM Literacy or VCE English units (including a Unit 3 and 4 sequence)
-
2 VCE VM Numeracy or VCE Mathematics units
-
2 VCE VM Work Related Skills units
-
2 VCE VM Personal Development Skills units
-
3 other Unit 3 and 4 sequences of your choice
VCE VPC
The Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC) is an inclusive, flexible option for students to complete their studies.
It’s designed for students who, for various reasons, aren’t able or ready to complete the VCE or VCE VM.
Students need to complete 12 or more units, including at least:
-
2 VPC Literacy units (or units from the VCE English group including VCE VM Literacy)
-
2 VPC Numeracy units (or units from the VCE Mathematics group including VCE VM Numeracy)
-
2 VPC Work-Related Skills units
-
2 VPC Personal Development Skills units.

The remaining four units can come from other VPC units or from a VET Certificate I or above subject.
Priority Industries
VCE VET priority industries are sectors experiencing strong job growth and a high demand for skilled workers. These pathways are aligned with Victoria’s fastest-growing industries and key government priorities—offering students the opportunity to gain skills that are in demand now and into the future.

By choosing a VET subject in a priority industry, students will be training in areas where employers are actively seeking new talent. This can increase their chances of finding meaningful work after school, taking the first step into a rewarding career.
